This is outstanding news! We just moved to Orange for just this reason. Keep up the great work!
Brad Marcus April 19, 2013 at 06:48 pm
Can we all just agree to not fire off any weapons or fireworks around schools and if we catchRead More someone doing such things, quietly beat the crud out of them for being so utterly stupid?
Vinnie Dee April 19, 2013 at 05:46 pm
You're welcome Jason. So glad that I could you out. Btw, that's called sarcasm. I didn't need theRead More link, already knew more about it than Patch did. But gee, thanks anyway.

Editor/Gary...where is the support now? I smell a hypocrit. A sensationalized headline about theRead More huge Protest, creating something out of nothing. DID DAMAGE, to the Kids and adults who worked very hard to present their craft. Yes, I know your bosses LOVE it when you create a sensationalistic headline worthy of the Nat'l Enquirer, just so you can get "hits" on a piece, big deal. To you maybe. In the long run, all the negativity it brought, which was nothing like your headline made it seem, hurt who? The hard working kids and adults of Amity, who are award winning performers, directors, musicians. Ticket sales are down and there are empty seats which has not happened in years. Then you have the nerve to put in a piece about tickets still available? Are you proud? And someone blogs, and has the gall to mention Newtown in the same piece as if comparing the two? Omg, disgusting. But then again, I've come to expect nothing but from this site. Nice job. All you did was hurt the people, adults and kids who, instead of getting arrested, doing drugs, fighting, and getting their names in this rag for that, are out working hard on their craft, to entertain and perform. Nice job Gary. I would again say your headline and stories are worthy of the National Enquirer, but even they have their standards. Shame on you. Yeah, I know, you won't post this reply. Because Patch doesn't want negative attention. It won't stop me from being honest and calling you out on it.

Good question, Jessie. We'll take a closer look into Orange's stance and involvement on this matterRead More and report back. In the meantime, I wanted to share a comment from a Bethwood Patch reader: WoodbridgeWatch: "This is a start, but there should be more interaction between the communities which all send their kids to high school together. If the plan is to keep it that way- and i assume it is, then some form of community to community network would be a great idea. [elementary level sports?] My son was stunned to find nearly [or more] than 1/2 the students he encountered freshman year were from Orange and Bethany and they were total strangers."

I just asked an Orange Board of Ed member about it. He said they were not informed about it althoughRead More their newly elected chair, Keith Marquis, attended the meeting but never asked the Board for input. How does that happen?

Congrats to these students! It's so wonderful to hear about the great achievements of the childrenRead More in the community. If you want to brag a little about something your kid has done shoot us an email at jaimie.cura@patch.com

Reader Tom List weighed in on Facebook with the following: "No one wants an increase, but IRead More will vote yes to keep the integrity of the Orange School system on par or above the surrounding towns/city's." (www.facebook.com/OrangePatch)

jessie, With all due respect I think that's a stretch. We have all sorts of student organizationsRead More that meet in the high school that support students individual cultural, religious and sexual identity affiliations. To say that the Rev. brought religion into the school while addressing the BOE is unfair and really a threat to these other worthwhile groups. It is a slippery slope and I would hate to see an accross the board intollerance of all groups that someone might find offensive. We can't have it both ways and I appreciate all perspectives...it's what helps maintain the balance and what helps us all maintain our rights.
Jessie Brown March 13, 2013 at 05:23 pm
Certainly Rev Ritonia has every right to speak. When a reverend addresses a public Board ofRead More Education, it is from religious perspective thus the connection of bringing religion into the schools.
orange mom March 13, 2013 at 05:08 pm
I agree that parents need to step up...no arguement here. Please answer though why Rev RitoniaRead More doesn't have the right to speak simply because she's affiliated with a church? How does that translate to her bringing religion into your schools? Why the need to be so defensive about someone who is trying to do good things for our community? She as well as all other community members have a right to voice their concerns...yourself included. My child is participating in this play so I clearly don't have a major problem with it, but I can understand the concerns of others and as you previously stated this is a public school and the community should have a voice.

Good luck to all the students and staff that have spent months preparing and rehearsing for thisRead More production. I hope you have a great turnout and a wonderful show.

The dialogue last night was indeed respectful. As repeated by all, we do need to come together as aRead More community and a country to address the issue of violence in our culture. The question I have is why now, 4 weeks before opening night of a high school production that had been in the planning stages since last fall? All this hype and sensationalized jargon about "violence back at Amity" has only derailed the hardwork and efforts of a tremendous group of high school students and their director. This is an extracurricular activity offered to those who choose to participate and members of the community who choose to attend. It's a choice and not appropriate for everyone. The dialogue is critical but the timing of this "protest" was opportunistic and only hurt a group of committed students and their director who been looking forward to the oppotunity showcase their talents.

Please folks. To attack those who have reservations about the choice to produce this musical in aRead More public high school...to refer to them as small minded and uneducated, is in itself small minded and uneducated. Have you so little respect for the rights of others to express their views that you need to turn to name calling and bullying? I have a child participating in the production of this show and very much look forward to seeing it, however I fully respect others rights to free speech. I encourage these discussions as they are a healthy part of maintaining balance and respect within our high school community, as well as the community at large. Why is it that we only have the right to free speech if we're on the "right" side? Think on it and if you are an adult, please set a healthy example for the kids and refrain from your bullying and name calling.

This is such a nice project. The portraits are quite good. I'm sure the benefits go way beyondRead More creating beautiful art.

Thank you for reminding people about the importance of reading and talking with young children;Read More singing and talking about family life ( describing what is for supper, etc.) Read to Grow provides free new and gently used books to children of all ages . Families can apply inline at www.readtogrow.org. There is a family application and a program application. The most important thing one can do for children is to provide books to them so they have a healthy supply of books to practice their reading skills and to have good bonding time with parents and siblings as stories are read together. Excellent advice. Greatly underestimated value to the child in this hurried, frantic world.

One last comment, after December 14, I don't think we can look at this as an unnecessary cost toRead More taxpayers. Sorry to disagree.
Jody Dietch February 28, 2013 at 03:21 pm
Kevin, the Resource Officer is the DARE officer in town and is already familiar with our schools. IRead More don't believe vacation is an issue since I believe he schedules vacations when school is not in session. One of the important things to note is that there is no "pattern" to his visits and thus anyone looking to create an issue would not be able to ascertain when he would be there. Even if they were to see him leaving, it doesn't necessarily mean he wouldn't be turning around and coming right back to the same school. The police are trained in this type of coverage and I have the faith in them to have the proper coverage for our schools.

Superintendent Lynn McMullin has put together her usual thorough and comprehensive explanation of aRead More major schools initiative, in this case, the SWOT analysis proposals coming before the taxpayers soon in the form of a bond issue (along with many other proposed school and non-school-related expenditures). It would have been helpful, I think, if she had explained that "SWOT" analysis stands for "Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats". It would have been helpful if she had told us what the cost of the proposed structural changes to the school buildings would be. Of course, what would the cost would be if we, the taxpayers, were NOT to authorize these structural changes? I support the structural changes to the schools proposed in Supt. McMullin's detailed letter. However, I do not support the addition of a "Resource Officer", which, unlike the addition of structural changes, becomes a recurring and perpetual cost. One resource officer covering four schools seems to be a stretch. Anyone looking for a "soft" target could quickly ascertain a pattern to the officer's visits to the schools; further, one resource officer would certainly have paid time off, and then we would need to have "coverage" for the absent resource officer, who would be paid overtime, and would not have the attributes heralded in Ms. McMullin's letter (knowledge of the students, relationships with students/families/teachers, etc.). Frankly, I think it is an unnecessary cost to the taxpayers.

I don't agree. Students need a break after being in school all day. A period of recreation,Read More preferably physical, would be better than starting homework right away. This solution worked for this student, but not for all.

Renee, that's such a neat picture - thanks for posting! Aaron, this blog is really cool!

Hi Cathy, thanks for the comment and for reading! Just want to note the author of that commentRead More wasn't me, but rather Orange Patch reader Christian Young.
Cathy Rappaport February 12, 2013 at 01:13 am
I agree with Jaimie Cura. These 3 days should be made up during Feb break not April. It seemsRead More silly to have the kids go back for a couple of days just to have a week off next week.
Jaimie Cura (Editor) February 11, 2013 at 09:19 pm
"If there are to be days taken out of the kids' vacations, it should be out of next week'sRead More February break ... not April's! Makes no sense to have two very short weeks back-to-back, and then to have a full week off ... but then to cut into the only other vacation after next week and before the end of the year." - Christian Young commented school vacations, on the Orange Patch Facebook page. www.facebook.com/orangepatch

Happy to read about something positive from a school for once and not fights and drugs and drug dogsRead More at Amity.
