Orange Lions Put Their Motto "We Serve" Into Action

The 23rd annual Thanksgiving Dinner hosted by the Lions Club of Orange takes place today.

The Orange Lions Club began the tradition of a Thanksgiving Dinner for seniors on the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 1989.

It met with some resistance in the beginning but the Club prevailed and now in its 23rd year, the event also includes Orange residents who do not have family nearby or are alone on Thanksgiving.

The town of Orange graciously allows the Lions use of the kitchen facilities at High Plains Community Center.  On Saturday, the gym was transformed into a decorated dining room where guests will enjoy this wonderful community event.

This has become one of the highlights of the holiday season, not only for the guests. While it requires volunteers and a good amount of effort, the Lions truly enjoy cooking together and serving this meal.

"It is one of our favorite undertakings,"  said chairperson Harold Cavallaro. "Many town officials volunteer along with the Lions to make this event a success. Along with a delicious dinner the seniors are treated to some of the finest entertainment."

In the past the Tappers have performed, Bob Mel has volunteered his time and talent, local school choral groups have sung for the event, and some of the Lions along with their children have played beautiful music on the piano to entertain the Thanksgiving crowd.

Each year, the local brownies and girls scouts bring handmade placemats that are used on the tables. The Foundation High School Leos Club makes candy goodie bags that are given to each senior and some Leos even come to help serve and share the day.

This is a well established tradition and one the Lions intend to continue indefinitely.

Based on the reservations and requests for home delivery of meals, the Lions plan to feed about 200 people again this year.
