What is Amity Doing About Snow Days?

Supt. John Brady released this information today:

From Amity Supt. John Brady:

The Board of Education received my recommendation on how to go about making up the four school days lost to Tropical Storm Irene. We will be using March 30 as a minimum day for students and waiting to see how the winter progresses. There are five “Snow Days” built into the calendar. Hopefully we can make up the remaining three days by use of these already identified days.

If we need more than two snow days, we would then shorten the student school year from 182 days to 180 days. We did this last year by shortening the end of year exam schedule and it was not ideal, but it worked.

If additional days are needed, we would then begin to take days from the April vacation as is indicated on the published District calendar.

I reported that February vacation is not a good option because we run the risk of inclement weather in February. February is also the height of flu season with increased absences during this period. It is beneficial to have a break during February to minimize the spread of flu.
