Amity Students learned the 'Hard Truth'

Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Students Against Destructive Decisions partner for a biannual presentation

On Tuesday, November 16 during an extended Advisory class every student in Amity High saw "The Hard Truth," a presentation by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) brought to the High School by SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). "The Hard Truth" is to teach students the consequences of drinking and driving. The presentation was shown in the auditorium live to all of the seniors and live telecast into the classrooms to the majority of freshman, sophomores, and juniors (the study halls and P.E. classes were brought to the auditorium as well). "The Hard Truth" Presenter Robin Cullin told the story of nearly a dozen youths that were negatively impacted by drunk driving. Nearly all the young people discussed have unfortunately passed on because of their injuries.

Only one discussed survived her incident. She was pulled out of the car with severe injuries on her foot. She went through four surgeries to recover her foot to the best of the doctors' abilities. She then went into a coma and her foot began to die off. To save her, the doctors had to remove her foot.

Another, Leah Hall, her family and a friend, were on their way home from a college hockey game in New Hampshire, in which her eldest son played. The family had just dropped the grandfather off. Several blocks away at an intersection, the family had a green light and a drunk driver ran through the red light and hit the car, right where Leah was sleeping. Leah was the only casualty in that case. Mrs. Hall joined Cullin to tell her daughter's story.

The students seemed to learn the message: drinking and driving don't mix. SADD Club and Student Assistance Councilor Gary Lindgren said the students really took it well. Lindgren also said that they present the Hard Truth every two years before the Homecoming dance so it "doesn't lose effect."
