Amity Graduates Can 'Achieve Anything' [Photos]

Parents, friends, teachers, and community members celebrated with the class of 2012 on Friday evening.

graduated 424 students Friday night. The predicted rainstorm moved the Amity graduation ceremony into the gym, with overflow seats in the cafeteria and some classrooms. But this didn’t stop the graduates and their families from celebrating with enthusiam.

Principal Charles Britton welcomed the crowd remarking on Amity’s sports, arts, and acedemics, calling the school a “treasure trove of accomplishments.” He also mentioned that over 160 students earned a community service distinction by completeing 100 hours of service over the last four years.

“I offer my heartfelt congratulations,” said Britton.

Superintendent John Brady also spoke about Amity’s accomplishments and reminded graduates to not settle for anything but the highest quality and to learn from others.

“Take what you learned inside and outside the classroom to move to the next stage of life,” said Brady.

William Blake, Amity Board of Education Chairman, spoke on behalf of the administrators. He said that previous graduates found a new appreciation for their Amity education once they get to college.

“We aim to educate all we can so you are prepared for the world you will enter,” said Blake.

Nina Yasick, senior class president, gave the first of three student speeches.

“We have the ability to achieve anything and everything. Certainly our past here at Amity High School can attest for that,” Yasick said.

“We are only here today because each of us has forged a path to this moment,” Nagarathnam said.

Associate Principal Anna Mahon presented graduate Zizi Yu with the Award of Distinction. Yu completed nine advanced placement classes, distinguished herself in science, and started service clubs. She will attend Yale University in the fall.

After the traditional turning of the cap tassle, graduated flooded into the hallways to reunite with family and friends.
