Around the world today, millions of people are celebrating International Talk Like a Pirate Day, a tradition started as a joke in 1995 by two mateys from Oregon.
Despite the popularity of the parody holiday, it seems that not even pirates spoke "pirate." Here's a great article from National Geographic dispelling some popular myths about pirates arrrr-ing, shivering their timbers, and making scallywags walk the plank.
