University Pays $3 Million For Hubbell Property

The University of New Haven will be operating its graduate program from the 47-acre campus in Orange.

The Hubbell Property in Orange will now be known as home of the University of New Haven.

The property, at 584 Derby Milford Road, sold for $3,025,000 on June 28, according to a transfer that was recorded at the Town Clerk's Office on July 1.

The sale was contingent upon zoning approvals from the local land use boards. And because the plans were denied once before securing approval, the closing, originally scheduled for April, was delayed.

The University of New Haven plans to operate its graduate programs on the 47-acre campus.

"We think it's a good fit for the town," First Selectman James Zeoli says. "It's a beautiful location and it offers a quiet space for their purposes."

In fact, with its location abutting a 376-acre town-owned open space and near the 500-acre Racebrook Tract, Zeoli says his hope is that the University develops a forestry studies graduate program.

"We have many opportunities in the area for that type of program," he says.

According to Vision Appraisal, the property's current assessed value is $3,848,400.
