Zeoli: "You Can't Fight Mother Nature, She Will Always Win"

The first selectman talks about the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the first day of school, and what the town is doing to help

First Selectman Jim Zeoli has been out and about checking on the damage throughout town and fielding questions and concerns, but his answer to many of residents’ questions is, “We don’t know.”

Zeoli said, “This hurricane rocked the world, and people just don’t understand why they still don’t have power; why we don’t have an exact time that their power will be restored…”

He said the town is doing everything it can to help. Extra people have been hired to work with the Public Works Department to help cut and remove all the downed trees across town and speed up the process.

“The Emergency Shelter is open for at least one more day and the showers at the pool are available for residents to use,” he said. “The Transfer Station is open until 4:30 p.m. every day this week so residents can get rid of the brush and debris from their yards.”

Maplewood (Assisted Living – formerly Laurel Estates) on Indian River Road gave the town five units for residents with medical issues to use while their homes are without power.

"A lot of businesses along the Post Road are open so you can get something to eat if you're hungry," he said.

“This is very frustrating for everyone,” Zeoli said. “You can’t fight Mother Nature, She will always win.”

First Day of School

Zeoli said he has been trying to contact the School Supt. To urge him to delay the first day of school by one week until Tuesday Sept. 6, but as of this afternoon, he has been unable to reach him.

If you have any questions or concerns, Zeoli welcomes you to call his office at 203-891-4700, and he will return your call as soon as possible.
