Town Makes Sand Bags Available for Orange Residents

With Hurricane Irene headed straight for Connecticut, the town is taking precautionary measures to help residents protect their property from excessive flood damage.

First Selectman Jim Zeoli said the Town Sand Shed is open to residents.

Highway Foreman Don Foyer said any Orange resident is welcome to come into the sand shed [located behind the Post Road Firehouse] and fill the (provided) bags with sand.

Zeoli said members of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) are lending a hand and helping residents prepare for the incoming storm.

Zeoli said residents, especially those who live near the river should be aware of their surroundings and what is happening outside and seek shelter before it's too late.

"The High Plains Community Center will be open as an emergency shelter as needed until the danger is over," Zeoli said.

Residents may enter the shed and obtain the sand bags as long as the doorway is not obstructed with a chain. The opening is large enough to drive a car, truck or SUV inside to make loading the bags easier.
