New Holiday Tree Approved for Orange Green (with update)

Changes are in store for Holiday Tree lighting.

At the March 9 Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Selectman Judy Williams put in a motion to replace the large evergreen tree on the Town Green traditionally decorated for the holiday festival.

The tree is mis-shaped and townspeople have commented on it for years, because it is far from perfect.

Williams searched several reputable nurseries and came up with various prices for a 12-14-foot Colorado Blue Spruce to replace the “holiday tree.” She presented the board with a list of the nurseries and prices.

Selectman Mitch Goldblatt made a motion to approve L&L Evergreen in Monroe and its price of $685 (the lowest quote).

The motion was unanimously approved.

Once in place, Williams said the tree would be tall (and impressive) enough to use in 4-5 years.

In the meantime, the Congregational Church people have granted the town permission to use the tall tree on the Green near the church for its holiday festival until the new one is big enough.

UPDATE: Williams clarified on Friday that the money for the purchase of the new town Christmas tree comes from the cell tower funds. This money is be used for items that are not in the town budget. Last spring we designated funds for the tree, but due to timing, it was put off to this spring.
