Volunteer Firefighters: Always on the Job

An unusual situation on Sept. 11 showed the Woodbridge community what Orange firefighters will do to help.

Three members of the Orange Volunteer Fire Association went to the Woodbridge firehouse on Sept. 11 to show their support for their brother firefighters and then found themselves on call in the neighboring town.

As the Woodbridge firefighters prepared for their 9-11 ceremony, the three Orange firefighters, including Asst Chief Keith Anderson, who were wearing their dress uniforms, didn't hesitate to jump into action when an SUV that had hit an object in the road and ruptured its oil pan, began leaking oil in the fire station parking lot.

Firefighter Rich Williamson took off his jacket and lay on the ground in his white dress shirt to assess the damage and the two others cleaned up the spill with speedy dry, an absorbent material that they use at accident scenes.

The mess was cleaned up in plenty of time for the firefighters to get washed up and join the crowd for the opening ceremony.
