VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS: Always On Call (See them at tonight's concert)

It doesn't matter what they are doing, but when the "tone goes off" Volunteer Firefighters jump into action to help those in need.

This Patch editor happened to be with Orange Volunteer Firefighter Lisa Kaplan this afternoon while we were relaxing in a cafe.

She had worked on paperwork at the firehouse most of the morning, and was calling a fellow firefighter to make some last minute plans when the tone went off on her portable radio.

She hung up on her collegue, rushed to her car and off she went to respond to a home where a smoke alarm had sounded.

The Deputy Chief was first on scene, Lisa put on her turnout gear and followed him in, then two other volunteer firefighters arrived.

It doesn't matter how hot and humid it is outside, the firefighters will still put on their full turn-out gear when they respond.

As the Chief talked to the homeowner, he reported there was no problem and everyone "Took an 8" (were dismissed).

After she returned her gear to her car, Lisa explained that this is what many calls are like, but even when a non-emergency is reported, they still come out and check on the residence or building to make sure that everything is safe and sound.

A group of Orange Volunteer Firefighters will attend tonight's concert at the Orange Fairgrounds and will be selling raffle tickets for the upcoming OVFD Carnival, which will take place on August 4, 5, 6, and 7.

Bring a little extra money and get your tickets early for a chance to win some great raffle prizes.
