Two Arrested for Refund Scam at Kohls

They allegedly tried to return merchandise they had just shoplifted, according to police.

Two people were arrested Wednesday after they allegedly took items off the shelves of Kohls Department Store and brought them to the customer service desk trying to return them and get the cash back, according to the Orange Police.

At about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday police got a report of shoplifting at the store at 250 Bull Hill Ln., according to reports. The investigation found that two people -- Ralph Avitable, 45, of 465 Crown St #219, Meriden, and Danielle Jones, 23, of 108 East Side Dr, Wallingford -- had taken $249.98 worth of merchandise off of the shelves and brought it to the customer service desk to return it for a refund, police said.

Both were stopped by security and police were notified.

Both were charged with sixth-degree larceny. Avitable was held on bond and arraigned Thursday in New Haven Superior Court, and Jones posted $500 bond and is due to appear in court on Dec. 21, according to police.
