An accident on Route 34 on the West Haven/Orange town line at around 3:30 p.m. snarled traffic for miles as police investigated.

West Haven firefighters responded to the scene and an AMR ambulance crew took an elderly man to a nearby hospital.

On Monday, police verified that this was a one-car accident. The vehicle went off the road for some unknown reason and slammed into the guardrail.
