A 22-year-old Orange man was arrested on multiple charges June 24 after he allegedly assaulted and threatened to kill his girlfriend.

The man, who police identified as Jake Gilfix of Grassy Hill Road, was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, first-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree threatening, and criminal violation of a protective order. Gilfix was arrested at his residence at 1:46 p.m., police said.

"Officers learned that the arrestee and the complainant had gotten into an argument, and during this argument, the arrestee held the victim down, choked her, kicked her, then threatened to kill her," police said. "While police were investigating this incident, the arrestee was served with a restraining order which did not allow him to have contact with the victim, but he then contacted her within one hour of being served with the order."

Gilfix was held on $100,000 bond. He was scheduled to appear in court on June 26.

Too bad these new cruisers don't have communication equipment. I saw an officer speed past me today with a cell phone clutched to his ear.

It might not set the best example, but I believe it is perfectly legal for them. Generally, Police Officers are better trained drivers then the population at large. However, the Milford Police tragedy still reminds us we all need to have some common sense and not take unecessary risks.

Hands-free technology is ubiquitous and cheap. Sure beats speeding down Post Road with one hand on the wheel.
