Notes In A Nutshell: Police Commission

February was a busy month for the Orange Police, from car seat installations to assisting in a homicide investigation.

 

At this month's Orange Police Commissioner's meeting the following information regarding February's activity reports was released.

Officers made 23 criminal arrests; 195 traffic tickets were issued; 30 larcenies were reported; 68 accidents were investigated; there were no commercial burglaries; there were no stolen cars reported; and 1 stolen motor vehicle was recovered; there were 2 residential burglary. Officers responded to 2,368 calls and 463 reports were written.

Burglaries —

On Feb. 1, police were called to a home on Wildwood Drive on a reported burglary after the resident came home about 5:30 p.m.  Police said someone had forced entry into the home and jewelry was taken.

On Feb. 3, officers responded to a burglary complaint on Englewood Drive around 3:30 p.m. when when the resident came home and found forced entry into the home. Police said jewelry and electronics were taken.
The Investigative Services Unit (ISU) is investigating both cases.

Robbery —

On Feb. 13, police were called to the Chase Bank for a reported robbery where the suspect implied he had a weapon. During the investigation, officers learned the description of the suspect matched an Orange resident.

Kenneth Appel was found at his home at 7 Wellington Dr. and he was charged with first-degree robbery, fifth-degree larceny and second-degree threatening.

More ISU

Among the cases with which the ISU was involved in February was assisting in a shoplifting case at the Christmas Tree Shops where a 66 year old man notified employees that other persons were shoplifting. The suspects assaulted the man before fleeing the store.

ISU also investigated a shoplifting at Target during which a person utilized an electronic banking card used by an associate of the shoplifter. They were able to identify the suspect through this person and have applied for an arrest warrant.

A theft of jewelry from residence on Bittersweet Drive during a Super Bowl party was reported on Feb. 6. ISU processed some evidence and developed a latent print they will be investigating further.

Connection to the Maine Murder

The Investigative Services Unit assisted Maine State Police in a homicide investigation along with Milford Police. Officers learned Maine State Police were looking to talk to a male, Daniel Porter, and a female that were visiting family in Milford concerning a missing person in Bangor, ME. Milford officers learned the two may be at the Marriot Hotel in Orange.

Officers waited there and ultimately located both of them. They agreed to speak to officers and to wait for Maine State Police to speak with them.

About one week later Maine State Police determined the missing person was a homicide and they arrested Daniel Porter of Jackson, ME for the murder.


Also in February

• D.A.R.E. Graduations for 6th graders were conducted at each of the elementary schools.
• Officer Aquino attended the Youth Services Advisory Committee meeting and the MDT meeting
• As reported on Patch, tobacco compliance checks were conducted with DMHAS on 18 stores, three of which were found to be in violation of selling to minors.
• Child car safety seats were installed during the month
• A tour of the police station was given to students from the Foundation School.
