Notes in a Nutshell: Police Commission

The April commission meeting minutes includes information on two burglaries, overtime shortage.

At this month’s Police Commissioner’s meeting, Asst. Chief Ed Koether gave the following incident report regarding police activities in March:

• On March 6 an attempted burglary was reported at 12:30 a.m. on Chestnut Ridge Road.

According to the report, two men attempted to remove a motorcycle from the garage, but left without the bike when homeowner confronted them.

• On March 28, someone forcibly entered a home on Indian River Road through the basement and took a variety of items.

• Youth Officer John Aquino installed car seats and began teaching DARE classes to Kindergarten children, led a tour of the police station for a Brownie troop, and conducted a lockdown drill at Amity Middle School.

• In March there were 30 criminal arrests, 199 motor vehicle tickets, 2 residential burglaries, three motor vehicle thefts (with one recovered), 28 larcenies, 80 motor vehicle accidents.

• Officers responded to 2,359 calls and 484 reports were written.

• Chief Robert Gagne said the records division brought in $213.23 from report sales; $740 for permits; $75 for parking tickets; $20 for fingerprints; $10 for record checks for a total revenue of $1,158. 23.

• Budget balances of note were the environmental system services funds are completely gone.

Utilities — phone, electric and gas are low, but that is a townwide concern.

Overtime is in the red.

Dispatcher overtime is okay, but being carefully monitored.

• Gagne said the Board of Finance approved  the department filling the 42nd officer space vacated by Officer Joe Funaro, who resigned and joined the FBI. The position for a 43rd officer will not be funded this year.

• Gagne said the department  received leadership training that proved valuable to all the officers.
