On Tuesday, Oct. 11, an incident on Lambert Road disrupted phone service in the area, including the Police Department. All 911 calls were immediately re-routed to Woodbridge and routine phone calls were sent through to the Orange Fire Department dispatch center at Station 2.

Chief Gagne said many area professional first responders assisted in keeping the town running without missing a beat, including Orange borrowing a portable repeater from the New Haven Police Department.

National Guard 1033 Program

Gagne said the department is benefiting from the National Guard's 1033 program from which surplus equipment is given to local police departments.

He said the equipment is obtained at no cost to the town except for maintenance.

Gagne announced that the police SWAT team will receive a HUMMER with less than 30,000 miles on it.

The vehicle will be fitted with a submersion kit that will allow it to go through deep water. (The inside will get wet, but it will be able to run.)

The vehicle will be painted black.

The department also will receive several AR-15 rifles
