Firefighters Respond to House Fire

Fire personnel from Orange and Derby were called to a stove fire on Zak Drive this afternoon.

Firefighters were called to Zak Court for a stove fire at 3:47 p.m. today.

Lt. Mark Osinski was first on scene at 3:52 p.m. and called for a second alarm and the Rapid Intervention Team from the Derby Fire Department when he saw heavy smoke coming from the home.

According to Osinski, the resident was in the basement when the fire in the kitchen broke out.  The homeowner smelled smoke and went to investigate, but couldn't make it halfway up the stairs due to the smoke, exited the home and called 911.

Osinski said the kitchen has heavy damage and is in need of renovation but the rest of the home only has smoke and water damage. The homeowner, however, has been displaced.

By 5:42 p.m. most of the fire aparatus and personnel had left the scene, but Smith remained to complete his investigation.

"Aside from the property damage, everyone got out safely and everyone got to go home tonight," Osinski said.
