Orange Obituary: Helen “Penny” Vaughn

The following obituary was submitted:

Helen “Penny” Vaughn, 77, of Orange, CT lost her battle with cancer on Oct. 3, 2013. Memorial Services will be held on Oct 19th at 10am in the Orange Congregational Church, Orange CT.

Penny’s love of art, travel, music and nature inspired those around her. She enjoyed playing charades, dressing-up in character and was always up for a bike ride, tennis game, walk in the woods, playing music or singing with others.

Penny’s family and friends will miss her warm smile and endearing companionship deeply.

An award winning artist, Penny studied art history, painting and drawing at Mt. Holyoke College, the Columbus School of Fine Arts, the Silvermine Guild and Southern Connecticut State University. In turn she taught watercolor privately and at the Hamden High School Adult Education Program.

Long-time resident of Orange, CT, Penny was involved in the formation of the Orange Arts and Crafts Guild and “Art Goes to School” program. She has shown her artwork at the Case Memorial Library and most recently at the Orange Town Hall. 

Penny loved spending time with family and friends at Four Winds Farm in Drums, PA and on Highland Lake in Stoddard, NH.

Born July 1936 in Danville, PA to the late Helen Pardee and Albert Conrad II Leisenring of Berwick and Drums, PA. She leaves her loving husband of 40 years, Edgar L. Vaughn, siblings Alice Lee (Bill) Shull, Betsy (Foster) Doan and Albert C. (Flora) Leisenring III, daughter Betsy Carlson, son David Carlson, grand children Gus Wennstrom, Anders Wennstrom, Margaret Carlson, Andrew Carlson, Robert Carlson and many nieces, nephews, cousins, step-children and grandchildren. 

The family is eternally grateful for all the love and support provided by friends over these last months.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Penny Vaughn Memorial Fund, People’s United Bank, Orange, CT.  Funds will be used to support local art and education programs.
