Kinky Boots is a comedy-drama based on the true story of a British shoe factory owner struggling to maintain its footing following the death of its founder.  While the livelihood of the entire community hangs in the balance, the owner comes up with a groundbreaking plan to save the company with the help of a sassy female impersonator with a great flair for style and design. This film explores interpersonal relationships and   people working together to support a community and build bridges.  Rather than focusing on why we are different, Kinky Boots focuses on what we have in common.  It is a feel-good story with a positive message.

Following the film Jason Kiss, Psy.D., Clinical Therapist with BHcare, will lead an interactive discussion on mental health and the intersection of Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues.

Kinky Boots, although not directly about  individuals with disabilities or mental health issues in particular, shows strong examples of the stigma, perception and bias that people who are LGBT face in employment and society. The film illustrates how self-confidence can be a major tool in addressing the issue of discrimination and in changing the perception of others.

The discussion led by Dr. Kiss will center on individuals who identify with a gender different from the one they appear to be at birth, the difficulties they may encounter, and how to best interact supportively. The ways of providing support for the individual can be generalized to anyone perceived as different due to a diagnosis involving mental health or other disabilities.

Refreshments will be available for purchase.  Free on-street parking is available after 4:00 p.m.  Paid parking is also available in the Joseph Steakhouse parking lot on Fairfield Avenue.
