The nor'easter took its time moving toward Orange, but now that it's here the snow is starting to pile up and impacts are beginning to be felt — in town and across the state and region.
Early this morning, along with the snow came a blizzard of school closures, and Amity and Orange were among the districts on that list.
The latest forecast from the National Weather Service is predicting that we'll get about 1 to 3 inches of new snow today, March 8. The snow will give way to rain and periodic snow showers after 4 p.m., the weather service says.
Winds will be relatively strong today, between 16 and 22 miles per hour, according to the forecast. That shoud make the mid-30 temperatures feel a bit colder.
The wind, coupled with wet, heavy snow, also presents the possibility of power outages. United Illuminating Co. and CL&P say they are ready.
In a statement released Wednesday as the storm approached, UI said, in part:
"UI officials have already begun plans for how to respond if power outages occur as a result of the storm. The company opened its Emergency Operations Center at 2 p.m. Wednesday and is making preparations, including ensuring that vehicles are fueled and ready to go; stocking poles, transformers and other equipment; and arranging appropriate staffing levels for the duration of the storm."
As of 8:25 a.m., no power outages were reported in Orange. To report an outage to UI, call 800-722-5584.
On the upside, tomorrow is supposed to be a bright, sunny Saturday. And there's a lot going on in town and others around us, including the always popular Greek Festival at St. Barbara Church.
