High Winds & Possible Flooding in Today's Forecast

A high wind watch, flood watch and possible thunderstorms are called for in the National Weather Service's Wednesday, Jan. 30, forecast for Middlebury and Woodbury. Read on to see how high temperatures could be in the area.

 

The National Weather Service issued a high wind watch for New Haven County and a flood watch for Litchfield County, for Wednesday, Jan. 30.

In Middlebury, gusts could get as high as 60 mph but will mostly average 25 to 35 mph, the NWS reports.

A high wind watch is issued when gusts are predicted to blow faster than 58 mph.

"These strong winds, in combination with heavy rain, could bring down whole trees, large tree limbs, power lines and unsecured outdoor objects," the NWS warns. "This could pose a hazard to anyone out driving or walking Wednesday night and to houses and other structures near larger trees.”

Middlebury's NWS Forecast

  • Wednesday: A chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3 p.m. Some storms could produce heavy rainfall. Areas of fog before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. South wind 6 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Wednesday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 5 a.m. Thursday, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 5 a.m. Some of the storms could be severe and produce heavy rainfall. Fog will be present in parts of the area. Low around 43. Windy, with a south wind 14 to 19 mph increasing to 27 to 32 mph. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
  • Thursday, Jan. 31: A slight chance of showers before 10 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 46. Breezy, with a west wind 16 to 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Woodbury's NWS Forecast

  • Wednesday: Areas of fog after 10 a.m. Showers likely, mainly after 4 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. South wind 10 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
  • Wednesday Night: Occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Areas of fog before 11 p.m. Low around 42. Breezy, with a south wind 20 to 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
  • Thursday, Jan. 31: A slight chance of showers before 1 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 45. Breezy, with a west wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
