Six Months In, Business Is Cookin' At Chef's

If you're cooking and you need a tool to make it just right, chances are you'll find it at Chef's Equipment Emporium in Orange.

Since opening at 449 Boston Post Road six months ago, people from throughout the area have been coming in for all their cooking needs. While customers have come from as far as New York or Waterbury, about 60% of the store's customers are local to Orange, Milford and West Haven, says store manager Nick Deens.

"People come in for the gadgets," Deens says. "All the hand-held gadgets."

One of his favorites is a can-opener that utilizes a crank instead of the normal twist function. "It's the simplest thing, but it makes it so easy," he says.

One item that Deens says is hot right now is The Big Green Egg -- a grill shaped like, you guessed it, a big green egg.

The ceramics on it were designed by NASA, Deens says, and it can be used to grill, smoke, roast or even bake cookies.

"It's a little pricey but you're not going to find a better charcoal grill," he says.

A large size egg will run you $850.
