Headed to Orange: Chef's Equipment Emporium On The Way

Get a look at the new tenants on the Boston Post Road.

The Property: 449 Boston Post Road. Just next to Bank of America, almost on the intersection of Orange Center Road, the location is prime Post Road real estate. Formerly the location of Murphy & McCoy's Furniture and La-Z-Boy Furniture.

The New Tenants: Chef's Equipment Emporium, a cooking supply store based in Wallingford and Berlin. Open to the public, their motto is "When you think cooking, think Chef's." According to the Chef's Equipment Emporium website, Chef's has been in business for 40 years and started as DeMartino Store Fixture. Geared toward both home and professional chefs, they offer "high quality cookware, cutlery, bakeware, small kitchen electrics, residential cooking equipment, gourmet food and ingredients and gadgets, gadgets and more gadgets," according to their web site. The family business is run by Dominick and Michele DeMartino, according to the site.

The Business Side: The Commercial Record reports owners CEE Orange, LLC paid $1.45 million for the property.

"I am so truly excited to have Chef's relocating to Orange," said First Selectman Jim Zeoli in a statement published by the Commercial Record. "This is a fit that currently does not exist in Orange and will offer easy accessibility to both the commercial chef and the homeowners that are looking for commercial quality in a new kitchen or remodel."

Chef's has been well-received in other towns: their location in Berlin  (possibly in part because it beat out an adult store called Very Intimate Pleasures.)

When Can I Go? According to Orange Economic Development, within October or November. Interior renovation is well underway at the site, and the Chef's logo recently went up in the front and side windows. (See photo.)

Just got this comment Facebook: "What a great addition to the neighborhood! I won't miss that drive to Wallingford to shop there." Anyone else been to the Wallingford or Berlin locations? How is this place?

We come into the area from New London and look forward to not having to head up I-91 after driving down to Milford/West Haven area.

As it turns out, the new "Chef's" in Orange is not affiliated with "Chef's Emporium" Wallingford. This comes from the staff in Willingford. Additionally, the number on the "Now Hiring" sign does not answer. Interesting but discouraging for job seekers.

Nancy, it is the same store, and the same exact logo down to the exact placement and angle of the toque (aka chef's hat) over their name. It has been confirmed by town officials that it is infact an extension of the Wallingford store, maybe you should get your facts straight before starting rumors.

Nancy and Lucy: it's a bit of a confusing situation, but in a way you're both right! My understanding is that Michele DeMartino is the owner of the upcoming Chef's in Orange, but that Dominick DeMartino has no affiliation with the new store and that the Chef's in Wallingford will be changing its name to DeMartino's at the beginning of next year.

Lucy your wrong and you should check your facts and not be so rude to Nancy... I currently work in Orange directly for the wife and owner of the Berlin location and YES it is true that store is not and will not have any affiliation with the other locations. I've also heard through the grapevine you can not use gift cards or return items this may pose and issue somehow... don't cha think? I know they may not be answering the phone because they're too busy soliciting old staff from other location with no luck. Our Laughing joke... wouldn't it be funny to think you have a staff because they come in pretend to bash the current job, take a new job and then leave these unprofessional soliciting fools high and dry lol Coral your too funny!
The Real Truth November 04, 2012 at 07:24 PM
Lucy is right it is in fact a chefs and davis is right the owners of chefs are brother and sister but they went there own ways i am in fact a employee of the new chefs in orange and can say for a fact that there is a staff for the orange chefs that they are there to work and be 100 % dedicated to there boss michele. who ever this CORAL person is you may want to check your facts. And they are not unprofessional at all i think you may just be tryin to start some unnecessary trouble i think i see a little hostility maybe a little false facts coming from your comment. My message to everyone is dont believe everything you may read the new chefs is going to be open sooner then you think and you can be the judge im sure that you will love this chefs as much as the others if not more...

I in the past HAVE worked for Michele, she is NOT the most understanding woman. She can be very MEAN, I have witness her screaming in her employees faces and degrading them in front on others. Wait and see is all I can say!
Kristina November 07, 2012 at 03:35 PM
All I can say is good luck!!! Michele is one of the most unprofessional woman I have ever worked for in all of my life!

Donna After reading the comments about the new Chef's Equipment Emporium in Orange, I think that the people who are bitter and negative and what I call just ignorant and positively jealous of what and who Ms. Michele DeMartino is...Look at your life, are you truly happy, my guess is NO! SHARKS just feed but they never are satisfied! Ya I guess the JOKES on YOU!..... I love that girl, her smile and laugh, that's something money can't buy and you can never take it from her! XOXO

Whooo holy comments LOL I'm home recovering today and I came to this article. The comments were more entertaining than the article! I need Xmas gift and was curious so I called the 3 locations. No one answered at the Orange location. I wasn't able to get much information from the Berlin location other than they are in NO Way and they empahized No Way affiliated with the Orange location therefore, gift cards & returns from Orange will NOT be exchangeable in the Berlin or Wallingford or vice versa. I then call the Wallingford location. Upon calling the Wallingford location they reiterated both Berlin and Wallingford have zero affilicaiton with the Orange location. I explained to the associate I was heading down to do some shopping in a week, I'm from the Valley I asked could giftcards be redeemed in Orange. I was told No! I asked about what was going on with the company and they had NO comment. So I asked why are they all using the same name and the woman chuckled and said " I honestly don't know " . I told her I found it very confusing to have two stores affilated and one not, yet they're all DBA Chefs. I am not happy about the closest location being independant of the others but honesly I can't frequent the high end kitchen stores so when I do it will be a road trip Home Goods, Chef's and Vinny's.

I stopped in recently and was very disappointed with their selection of bean grinders and pasta machine attachments. Pretty sad that a department store(Target) has a more extensive selection of grinders. The prices on what they did have in those 2 product lines were not competitive with other brick and mortar stores either.

I live in the Valley and have never visited the Wallingford or Berlin store. I truly enjoyed my two visits to the Orange store and found the employees very friendly and anxious to help. I expected the items to be pricey compared to the big box stores, but I was not at all dissapointed in the quality. The only complaint I had is that I just couldn't take in all that the store offers. I'm very happy with the store and wish the owners all the blessings for a long and fruitful tenure in Orange. Ron East
