Déjà Vu: Porch & Patio in Orange

From stock boy to store owner, carrying on a tradition on the Boston Post Road.

In June of 1990, no one could have imagined that the young man who came to work in the warehouse as a stock boy, would end up the owner of that same business 20 years later. When Jeff Heitmann graduated Derby high school in 1989, he knew that college wasn’t a good fit for him. His parents and grandparents told him to “get a job”. Jeff landed a position as stock boy at , in Orange, CT.

Founded in 1951, Sid Teitelman and his wife Hilda built a vibrant business in Orange. Before long, Sid had opened five more stores throughout Connecticut. His operating philosophy was built around quality brands, top notch customer service and a strong devotion to his loyal staff.

After Jeff mastered the stock boy position, his next assignment was driving the delivery truck. Shortly thereafter, Sid saw his potential and brought him to the Orange location to train in sales. Jeff flourished and soon became a manager.

When Sid sold the business in 2003, Jeff tried his hand at operating casual furniture stores in Wethersfield and Canton, CT. He gained valuable experience in all facets of the business.

In February, 2010, with Sid Teitelman’s blessing and encouragement, Jeff purchased and opened his first Porch & Patio store at the original location, 363 Boston Post Rd., Orange. Same address and even the same phone number. A clear case of déjà vu.

Now, a whole year has gone by. Jeff said, “Mr. Teitelman told me, when you treat a customer right, they will be a friend for life.” Carrying on where Sid left off has become Jeff’s quest. Unfortunately, Sid passed away this past year at 96. He would have been so proud of his protégé.

The duplication of one part of Sid’s legacy would be enough for most, but not for Jeff. He just did it again. On April 3, 2011, Jeff Heitmann opened another Porch & Patio in the same location originally opened by Sid: 67 Federal Rd., Gray’s Bridge Common, on Route 7 in Brookfield. Only four more locations to go.
