WARNING! Turn Off Your Breakers!

If you are using a generator, please read this story.

If you have a generator that is hooked into your main power supply, this information could help save lives: Turn your breakers off!

After talking to representatives from the UI and a couple of local electricians, we learned that many residents are not aware of this particular hazard.

If you are hooked into your main electrical supply, you should turn your breakers off. Otherwise you are feeding live electricity out into the wires on the street, which could be dangerous to utility workers — they may touch a wire that they think is dead, but it is being fed “juice” from your generator, and they could get electrocuted.

Also, you could have an explosion when the power is restored and it is coming in from the street as it is still being fed by your generator.

The UI has been working around the clock to restore power around town, so, if you are using a generator now, heed this warning for yourself and for the worker up on the pole outside.
