Paying Your Property Taxes 'Under the Sea' Style

It's that time of year when the cha-ching of the cash register resounds in the Tax Collector's Office.

And with local taxes due starting July 1, there's been a steady stream of property owners coming in to Town Hall. On last Thursday alone, a handful of residents came in within about a 15-minute period.

"It's that time of year," one woman said as she left.

This year, though, there is a new theme in the Tax Collector's Office: Under the Sea.

As they have each season and holiday for the past several years, the staff in the office has gone all out with the decorations. Fittingly, the theme is all about summer so you'll see beach-themed items that are tropic and fun-in-the-sun inspired.

Taxpayers may recall past decorations have ranged from Summer Olympics to a Tiki Bar and camping.

"We try to make it a little easier to pay your taxes," says Sally Ferko, an assistant tax collector.

Ferko, along with her counterpart Lynn Plaskowitz and Tax Collector Sandra Pierson are the creative minds behind the themes. They pay for all the decorations themselves and put them up when they're not on the clock.

As for those taxes, you can pay using cash or check only. Do so before Aug. 1 to avoid paying a penalty of 1.5% per month you're late.
