A 5K-road race for those 65 and older is planned for Sunday

Attention Active Seniors: This is for You

Former Amity Track Coach Chris Dickerson, owner of the Woodbridge Running Company, has known George ‘Doc” Whitney for more than a decade.

Whitney, now 92, sought out Dickerson’s advice when he began running 5K races, and the two have been friends ever since.

Tomorrow, June 12, the inaugural George “Doc” Whitney 5K run for senior citizens 65 years and older will step off at the High Plains Community Center, Orange Center Road, in Orange at 9 a.m.

The race will follow the same route as the Chilly Chili Run and everyone is encouraged to line the streets and cheer these awesome seniors on.

Unlike other 5K road races, participation in this event is free.

Dickerson, who organized the event, said he’s received about 45 pre-race sign-ups, and more are expected to show up and participate tomorrow.

Doc Whitney, who became a bit of a legend at the New Year’s Day Chilly Chili Run, now lives with his daughter in Vermont. He keeps himself in shape by running along the roads in the ski town, greeting townspeople and gaining the same notoriety that he had in Orange.

As the race sponsor, Whitney plans to run in tomorrow’s race.
