BRIDGEPORT, November 13, 2012 – A Bridgeport attorney has been appointed to the board of a non-profit legal assistance organization in New Haven, it was announced today. Atty. James Horwitz, of Koskoff, Koskoff & Bieder,
was one of two attorneys named to the Governing Board of New Haven Legal Assistance Association, Inc. (LAA).

“We are thrilled to welcome Jim to the governing board of
New Haven LAA,” said Susan Nofi-Bendici, Executive Director of LAA.  “Strong board leadership helps us carry out our mission of providing high-quality legal services to those who otherwise would not have access to justice because of limited income, age, disability, discrimination and other barriers.”

LAA provides a full range of legal services including
representation, advice, community education and policy advocacy, in the areas of family and child law, housing, consumer issues, elder law, benefits and employment, disability, and criminal cases.

“For nearly 50 years, New Haven Legal has been working to secure justice for, and to protect the rights of, those New Haven County residents who could not afford to engage legal counsel.  It was one of the first underwritten legal services programs and was used as a model for similar programs across the country,” Horwitz said.  “I’m delighted to be part of this groundbreaking organization and hope to make a significant contribution to its critical good works.”

A resident of Woodbridge, Horwitz is well known for handling medical malpractice cases related to obstetrics, cardiology, neurology and pediatric medicine as well as a wide range of other medical specialties.  He has lectured nationally on birth injuries and other issues relating to medical malpractice.

Horwitz has worked on precedent-setting cases that resulted in record verdicts and settlements, including numerous multi-million dollar settlements. He recently won $58 million, the largest medical malpractice verdict at the time in Connecticut history, for a Norwalk family whose son suffered a birth injury that resulted in cerebral palsy.

He is a graduate of Colgate University, and received his
Juris Doctorate from Yeshiva University Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, New York.

Along with Horwitz, Attorney Daniel W. Adelman, of The Adelman Law Office, was also appointed to the Governing Board of LAA.
